Scaling up the activities and increasing the sustainability of the Code for Romania Association, as well as growing their volunteers’ community, who works to develop digital solutions for issues of public interest.

CONTEXT

Romania is witnessing a peak of civic engagement, where more and more people are looking at how they can go beyond their daily routines to contribute to the well-being of their community.

Romania has also been registering a growing boom of its IT industry. The number of well-prepared IT developers is on a constant rise and, due to high demand on the market, so are their wages. This has been leading to a growing digital divide between the for profit, on one hand, and the non-profit and institutional sectors, on the other hand, where the latter are unable to compete on the market to employ good IT professionals.

The Code for Romania Association was established in 2016 to channel civic energies towards some practical goals and to help develop the civic technology infrastructure in Romania. Today, Code for Romania is the second largest civic tech organization/community worldwide, with over 600 members, out of which over 150 are from the diaspora.

STRATEGY

The size of the community stands witness to both the wish of IT developers, designers, social scientists and communication specialists to contribute with their specialized skills to the development of Romania, which is undeniably part of a wider social awakening, as to the success of the organizational model of Code for Romania.

In the next two years, Code for Romania will develop its executive team and will test and develop sustainability solutions to maintain and scale up its successful activities.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:

1
Strengthened civic tech infrastructure that bridges society issues with expertise and volunteerism;
2
Civic engagement fostered by improved context and opportunities for IT developers, designers, social scientists and communication specialists to contribute pro-bono with their specialized skills to the development of Romania.
